about

I lived with a farmer community in Calbiga, Samar, Eastern Visayas for four days. This community struggles with the backwardness of their agricultural tools as well as the effects of Typhoon Haiyan on their local economy. To illustrate, Typhoon Haiyan opened the gates for foreign companies to sell produce at extremely low rates, forcing local farmers to significantly decrease their organic produce by nearly 100 pesos (equivalent to $2 US dollars) and to almost 30 pesos per pound. The land and their produce is their only source of income.

This track is a sonic diary to my 4-day integration with the farmers in Calbiga. I incorporated audio samples of farmers milling rice, farmers sifting through the rice, relaxing next to a river with the famers, and traffic in Tacloban city. The track represents their hope for genuine democratic change in Philippines and beauty in their collective living behind their militant spirits.
